Craigneuk & Petersburn

Not just home, it's a community

Craigneuk & Petersburn

Craigneuk started as part of the post war rebuilding and expansion of communities in the late 40's born out of the then governments introduction of a major housing policy and around 840 homes were built as Craigneuk housing estate in Airdrie.

It wasn't long before more homes were needed as soldiers were de-mobbed from the army and major industries such as coal and steel were in great demand. So in the early part of the 1950's a further 420 homes were built and Petersburn was born right next door.

Nearly another 20 years passed and another 1500 homes were built on land that has a long standing affiliation with not only two major industries associated with Scotland and Britain but with all four (coal, rail, shipbuilding and steel).

Not only has its long affiliation with these industries sustained its place in the economic history of Airdrie and Lanarkshire....In that it was part of the Great Caledonian Railway or even the fact it produced sheet metal for the first iron clad battleships.

Our area also has a Glen with its own story to tell which is not only immersed in botanical beauty but also firmly entrenches itself within Scottish history.

I am sure none of us would claim Craigneuk and Petersburn to be Idyllic. However, we could say that in all the years that have passed....Not only have we come to make it our home but we have brought both together to make it a community.

DLMG & Craigneuk Petersburn Online

Craigneuk & Petersburn Online was generated across a number of community projects over the last decade and finalised by The Digital Links Media Group. It has been from one perspective, a journey through space and time, but only that space which governs the hard drive of the computers of all involved!

With so much to offer Craigneuk and Petersburn has a bright future and this website we hope has been an opportunity for our community to come together and get involved. We also hope that its an opportunity for you who might be reading this to not only take pride in your community but to get involved too.
